What is Yersinia?

Yersinia is a genus of bacteria typically carried by wild animals and livestock. In humans, Yersinia pestis is a species of Yersinia which is responsible for the pneumonic, septicemic and bubonic plagues, it is usually transferred to humans via rat fleas, these infections are typically no longer present in the UK. Yersinia enterocolitica can survive in refrigerated meat and causes the disease yersiniosis. Infection with Yersinia enterocolitica can be acquired by consuming undercooked meat, unpasteurised milk or infected water. Symptoms of yersiniosis include diarrhoea, fever and abdominal pain.

Why take the test?

This test screens for antibodies produced in response to infection with Yersinia species. It is typically used to diagnose yersiniosis.
