What is yellow fever?
Yellow fever is a viral disease spread by mosquitos, it gets its name from a characteristic symptom of jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). Though many infections with yellow fever produce only mild symptoms, severe cases can rapidly lead to death. Infections with yellow fever virus typically occur in tropical regions with a high mosquito population. There is a vaccine for yellow fever virus which lasts for up to 10 years. Symptoms of yellow fever include; nausea, muscle pain, light sensitivity, low appetite and elevated temperature. Severe infections can rapidly lead to jaundice, organ failure and bleeding from the eyes, nose, mouth, and in vomit and faeces.
