About Whooping cough (blood)
What is whooping cough?
Whooping cough (pertussis) is a bacterial respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Whooping cough is characterised by bouts of coughing which can be accompanied by a ‘whoop’ sound during inhalation. It is highly contagious and poses a serious risk to babies and young children, with coughing bouts resulting in broken ribs and fatigue. There is a vaccine for whooping cough and it can be treated with antibiotics if caught early. Symptoms of whooping cough include; runny nose, fever and a cough. These symptoms progress into severe bouts of coughing which cause vomiting, broken ribs and fatigue. Newborns may experience periods without breathing instead of coughing.
Why take the test?
This test screens for antibodies produced in response to Bordetella pertussis in the blood. It is typically used to confirm immunity to whooping cough either through previous exposure or vaccination.
