What is West Nile virus?
West Nile virus (WNV) is a viral infection spread through mosquito bites. It is not naturally found in the UK and instances of transfer to the UK are rare as the disease is not contagious from human to human. Symptoms of WNV include flu-like symptoms, skin rash and nausea. WNV often produces no symptoms and generally resolves without treatment but those with weakened immune systems can develop severe infection leading to seizures, weakness and disorientation.
