What is varicella-zoster?
The varicella-zoster virus causes an infection called varicella, or more commonly known as chickenpox. Chickenpox is typically a childhood illness which can be prevented by vaccination. Chickenpox symptoms include fever and an itchy blister rash. The rash is contagious until the blisters scab over. The varicella-zoster virus can cause shingles in adults who were infected as children causing pain and blisters.
