About Varicella zoster antibodies (igm)

What is varicella-zoster?

The varicella-zoster virus causes an infection called varicella, or more commonly known as chickenpox. Chickenpox is typically a childhood illness which can be prevented by vaccination. Chickenpox symptoms include fever and an itchy blister rash. The rash is contagious until the blisters scab over. The varicella-zoster virus can cause shingles in adults who were infected as children causing pain and blisters. Varicella-zoster antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight infection against the virus. IgM antibodies are a particular type of antibody and are the first to be produced in response to an infection offering short-term protection.

Why take the test?

This test detects the presence of varicella-zoster IgM antibodies in the blood and can be used to help diagnose a current infection.
