About Ureaplasma (pcr)
What is ureaplasma?
Ureaplasma are bacteria in the class of Mycoplasma, which commonly colonise the urinary or genital tract. In the majority of people, ureaplasma are part of the normal bacterial population but they can also cause infection if their population increases.
Symptoms of infection can vary, including; problems conceiving, pain, genital discharge and genital itching. Ureaplasma can be passed from mother to newborn, in severe cases this can lead to pneumonia, respiratory problems, meningitis or miscarriage.
Why take the test?
This test screens for the presence of ureaplasma DNA in the urine. It is used to diagnose ureaplasma infection but will give a positive result even if ureaplasma are not causing symptoms.
