About Trichinella serology
What is trichinella?
Trichinella is a type of roundworm that causes an infection called trichinosis (also known as trichinellosis). Larvae may be ingested by humans from eating raw or undercooked meat. The larvae remain in the intestines whilst they grow into adult worms.
These worms then release their larvae which can enter the bloodstream and travel to tissues such as the muscles where they form cysts.
Symptoms during the early stages of infection may include vomiting and diarrhoea. Once the larvae enter the bloodstream, symptoms may include fever, headache and muscle pain. Trichinella antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight infection against the parasite which allows detection of an infection.
Why take the test?
This test detects the presence of trichinella antibodies in the blood and can be used to diagnose an infection.
