What is toxoplasma?
Toxoplasma is one of the most common parasites and causes toxoplasmosis in infected people. Toxoplasma is found in the faeces of cats and in undercooked meat. Some people may experience flu-like symptoms, but the majority of people infected with toxoplasma will not show symptoms.
However, toxoplasma may cause defects or complications to a developing unborn baby if the mother is infected. Toxoplasma antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight infection against the parasite.
IgG antibodies offer long-term protection against pathogens after initial exposure. The avidity is a measure of how strongly antibodies bind to a pathogen which increases with time after infection.
Why take the test?
This test detects the avidity of IgG antibodies produced against the parasite toxoplasma and can be used to determine the time since a toxoplasma infection.
