About Toxoplasma antibodies
What is toxoplasma?
Toxoplasma is one of the most common parasites and causes toxoplasmosis in infected people. Toxoplasma is found in the faeces of cats and in undercooked meat. Some people may experience flu-like symptoms, but the majority of people infected with toxoplasma will not show symptoms.
However, toxoplasma may cause defects or complications to a developing unborn baby if the mother is infected. Toxoplasma antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight infection against the parasite. IgM antibodies are a particular type of antibody and are the first to be produced in response to an infection offering short-term protection.
IgG antibodies offer long-term protection against pathogens after initial exposure and the presence of IgG antibodies indicates immunity. This may be a result of a previous infection.
