What is thrombin time?
Thrombin is an important enzyme for blood clotting. Thrombin converts fibrinogen into fibrin which is needed for clot formation. The thrombin time indicates the speed at which the blood clots.
Clot formation is vital to prevent excessive bleeding. A prolonged thrombin time may indicate a disorder affecting fibrinogen or a liver disease. Medicines such as warfarin and heparin also increase the thrombin time.
