What is tetanus?
Tetanus is a serious infection caused by the Clostridium tetani bacteria. A toxin produced by the bacteria affects the nervous system causing muscle spasms and stiffness. Symptoms may include a lockjaw and difficulty swallowing as a result of the effect on muscles.
Tetanus is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment. Tetanus can be prevented by vaccination. Tetanus antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system in response to the vaccination which helps the body to defend against the bacteria upon an infection.
Booster vaccinations are required after the first vaccination to make sure your body has enough antibodies to fight off infections.
