About Syphilis by pcr (chancre)
What is Syphilis?
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Syphilis infection is divided into three categories; primary, secondary and tertiary.
Primary syphilis is the first stage of the disease, showing symptoms including small, painless ulcers on the genitals, anus and mouth. This is the contagious stage of the disease. Secondary syphilis is a latent stage of the disease in which symptoms disappear and the disease lies dormant.
Tertiary syphilis occurs in up to 30% of untreated cases, sometimes years after the initial infection. Tertiary syphilis can affect the brain, nerves, eyes and a variety of other important tissues in the body. It is important that syphilis is diagnosed prior to this, as treatment cannot reverse any damage caused by the infection.
Why take the test?
This test screens for the presence of syphilis bacteria on a swab from an active ulcer. It is used to diagnose syphilis infection.
