About Sulphite
What is sulphite?
Sulphites are chemical compounds containing sulphite ions. Sulphites are often added to food and drink as preservatives but occur naturally in some products such as wines. Sulphites are usually broken down by a molybdenum-dependant sulphide oxidase enzyme and they are not typically present in urine.
The presence of sulphites in urine can be the results of molybdenum deficiency, sulphite oxidase enzyme deficiency or hypersensitivity to sulphites.
Sulphite hypersensitivity is more common in individuals with asthma, causing lung irritation and asthmatic symptoms. Some individuals are allergic to sulphites and can suffer from symptoms of anaphylaxis.
Why take the test?
This test screens for the presence of sulphites in the urine. It is commonly used to diagnose sulphite sensitivity.
