About Skin autoantibodies
What are skin autoantibodies?
Skin autoantibodies may be present in conditions such as pemphigus and pemphigoid. Pemphigus and pemphigoid are autoimmune diseases characterised by blistering of the skin.
Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In rare cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. The antibodies that cause pemphigus, attack the outer layer of the skin causing blisters that may easily break. In pemphigoid, the body produces antibodies against a lower level of the skin leading to tougher blisters.
Why take the test?
This test detects the presence of skin autoantibodies associated with the autoimmune conditions pemphigus and pemphigoid.
