About Schistosome antigen

What is a Schistosome antigen?

Bilharzia or schistosomiasis is a disease caused by the parasitic flatworm schistosoma. Schistosomes or blood flukes are commonly found in freshwater in Africa and can also be found in areas of South America, the Caribbean, Asia or the Middle East.

Infection typically occurs after exposure to immature schistosomes but may not immediately present with symptoms. Long-term bilharzia can result in damage to major organs including the bladder, kidneys and liver.

Why take the test?

This test screens for antigens of schistosomes - unique markers associated with the parasite - in the blood. It is used to detect the presence of schistosomes and diagnose bilharzia.
