About Rubella and varicella immunity

What are rubella and varicella?

Rubella (also known as German measles) and varicella (also known as chickenpox) are typically childhood illnesses which can be prevented by vaccination. Rubella is a viral infection caused by the rubella virus and chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Rubella symptoms include runny nose, red eyes, headache, tender lymph nodes and a rash that spreads in a similar pattern to measles.

Chickenpox symptoms include fever and an itchy blister rash. The rash is contagious until the blisters scab over. The varicella-zoster virus can cause shingles in adults who were infected as children causing pain and blisters.

Antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight infection against the virus. IgG antibodies are a particular type of antibody that offer long-term protection against pathogens after initial exposure. The presence of IgG antibodies indicates immunity. This may be a result of a previous infection or from vaccination.

Why take the test?
