About Ross river virus

What is Ross River virus?

Ross River virus is the most common infection transmitted by mosquito-bites in Australia. People most at risk are in warmer climates near to bodies of water. There is currently no vaccine to prevent Ross River infections, so the best prevention is avoiding mosquito bites. Symptoms of an infection include fever, chills, muscle and joint pain and a rash on the trunk, arms and legs.

The body’s immune system produces antibodies in response to a Ross River infection and releases them into the bloodstream which allows the infection to be detected.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of Ross River antibodies in the blood and can be used to help diagnose a Ross River infection.
