What are rickettsiae?
Rickettsiae are a group of bacteria that typically live on ticks, fleas and mites. Rickettsia typhi (murine typhus) is a type of bacteria carried by rodent fleas and Rickettsia rickettsii (Rocky Mountain spotted fever) is carried by ticks. Infections are most commonly spread by bites or contact with infected faeces.
Symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, muscle pain and a rash.
Rickettsiae antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight infection against bacteria. IgM antibodies are a particular type of antibody and are the first to be produced in response to an infection offering short-term protection. IgG antibodies offer long-term protection against pathogens after initial exposure and the presence of IgG antibodies indicates immunity. This may be a result of a previous infection.
