What is the respiratory viral screen?
Respiratory viruses infect and replicate in the respiratory tract. Viruses are among the smallest of infectious agents, often comprising only minimal genetic material and capsid. They are unable to replicate without a host organism as they have no cellular machinery contained within them, manipulating host cells to do this for them instead.
Dormant viruses outside of any host are called virions. Virions can survive for extended periods of time as they do not require any energy or nutrients in this form, meaning contaminated surfaces and objects can enable their spread. Respiratory viruses are often spread through coughing and sneezing.
Symptoms of respiratory viruses vary but often include coughing, sneezing, runny or blocked nose, sore throat and fever.
