What is rabies?
Rabies is a viral infection of the central nervous system and brain typically caught from infected (rabid) animals. Infection with rabies is serious and if not treated before symptoms appear, is almost always fatal. Rabies is extremely rare in the UK but is present in many countries throughout the world. Vaccination with rabies is advised when travelling to countries where the disease is common.
Individuals who work with the rabies virus, in research or vaccine production, for example, are advised to get checked for rabies antibodies regularly to ensure their immunity to rabies is not compromised.
