About Purkinje cell antibody (yo)
What are Purkinje cells?
Purkinje cells are a type of neuron in the cerebellum. They are the largest type of neuron in the human brain and play essential roles in motor control and learning.
Antibodies to Purkinje cells (anti-Yo) are antibodies which attack the Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, leading to paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD). Anti-Yo antibodies are associated with rare breast and gynecologic cancers which present with PCD, sometimes prior to symptoms of cancer.
In these cases prognosis relies heavily on early diagnosis and removal of tumours, as there is no effective treatment to reverse the condition.
Why take the test?
This test screens for anti-Yo antibodies which target Purkinje cells in the cerebellum. It is used to diagnose rare forms of breast and gynecologic cancers which result in paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration.
