About Prothrombin (time and dose)

What is prothrombin?

Prothrombin is a protein produced by the liver that is important for blood clotting. Blood clotting (coagulation) is an essential process for preventing excessive bleeding after an injury. A prothrombin time test measures the time it takes for your blood to clot.

Conditions associated with abnormal blood clotting include haemophilia, antiphospholipid syndrome, deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. It can also be used to monitor the effect of blood-thinning medications such as heparin.

Why take the test?

This test measures the speed of clotting and can be used to investigate the cause of unexplained bleeding or clotting, or to monitor the effect of blood-thinning medications such as heparin.
