About Protein c
What is protein C?
Protein C is a protein produced by the body to reduce clotting. A protein C deficiency may result from insufficient protein C levels or loss of function of the protein. This increases the body’s risk of clotting.
Blood clots can occur in different parts of the body such as in veins (venous thromboembolism) and must be detected early for treatment. The causes of protein C deficiency may be genetic or acquired.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of protein C in the blood and can be used to investigate protein C deficiency or the cause of blood clots.
