About Porphyrins screen (blood)
What are porphyrins?
Porphyrins are a group of molecules which contribute to the production of oxygen-carrying haemoglobin in the blood. Porphyrins are typically found in small concentrations in bodily fluids including urine, blood and stool. Elevated porphyrin levels in bodily fluids can indicate porphyria, which can be triggered by a variety of factors such as drugs, foods and sun exposure. Cutaneous porphyrias affect the skin, leading to a variety of symptoms including; sensitivity, painful redness, blisters, itching and fragile skin. Acute porphyrias affect the central nervous system, producing symptoms including; severe abdominal pain, muscle pain or tingling, seizures, problems passing stool and others.
