What is poliovirus?
Poliovirus is a virus responsible for the disease poliomyelitis (polio). Historically polioviral infection was common, resulting in a range of symptom severity from no clinical symptoms to severe, life-threatening paralysis. There is no cure for poliovirus. Instances of polio worldwide have become rare thanks to the polio vaccine introduced in the mid-20th century and it has been eradicated altogether in the UK.
Vaccines convey immunity by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies to target the agent that they protect against. These antibodies circulate in the blood permanently to quickly respond to infection with the virus, preventing it from causing disease.
Many individuals will fight off infection with poliovirus on their own but it can cause symptoms including sore throat, headaches, aches and pains and nausea. In extreme cases, poliovirus can affect the central nervous system leading to temporary or permanent paralysis.
