What are pneumococci?
Pneumococcal bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae) typically inhabit the respiratory tract, sinuses and nasal cavity. They commonly colonise healthy individuals without causing any symptoms but can also cause pneumonia and meningitis in those with weakened immune systems such as children and the elderly. Symptoms of pneumonia include; a dry cough, chest pain, fever and respiratory problems.

This test screens for the presence of pneumococcal bacterial antigens in the urine. It is used to diagnose pneumococcal infection in individuals with a suspected invasive infection.
