About Plasminogen activator inhibitor 1

What is plasminogen activator inhibitor-1?

Plasminogen is the precursor of important proteolytic blood enzyme plasmin. Plasmin is responsible for degrading several blood proteins, including fibrin in fibrin-based blood clots. This process is essential for the regulation of blood clotting. Plasminogen is inactive and is converted to the active plasmin enzyme in response to chemicals such as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) where it is necessary.

Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) inhibits the activation and conversion of plasminogen into plasmin, which is an important process for regulating the breakdown of blood clots. Deficiency in PAI-1 can lead to haemorrhaging and improper blood clotting mechanisms.

Why take the test?

This test measures the amount of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) in the blood. It is typically used to help diagnose unexplained bleeding and improper blood clotting.
