About Plasminogen

What is plasminogen?

Plasminogen is the precursor of important proteolytic blood enzyme plasmin. Plasmin is responsible for degrading several blood proteins, including fibrin in fibrin-based blood clots. This process is essential for the regulation of blood clotting.

Plasminogen is inactive and is converted to the active plasmin enzyme in response to chemicals such as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) where it is necessary. Deficiency in plasminogen can lead to excessive or unregulated blood clotting conditions such as thrombosis or hyperfibrinolysis.

Why take the test?

This test measures the amount of plasminogen in the blood. It is used to diagnose a suspected plasminogen deficiency.
