About Phospholipid antibodies

What are phospholipid antibodies?

Antiphospholipid antibodies are typically present in an autoimmune disease called antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In rare cases the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells.

Antiphospholipid antibodies are produced and bind to phospholipids, increasing the likelihood of a blood clot. The presence of antiphospholipid antibodies is also associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), HIV and some types of cancer.

Why take the test?

This test screens for the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies and is used to diagnose conditions such as APS or to investigate the cause of recurrent miscarriages.
