What is the Paul Bunnell test?
The Paul Bunnell test is used to investigate glandular fever, also known as mononucleosis. Glandular fever is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus which is a herpes virus and one of the most common viruses to infect humans. Symptoms of the virus include fatigue, fever, swollen lymph nodes and a sore throat. It is common to be infected as a child and not to show any symptoms. In teenagers or adults, symptoms may last a couple of weeks and in some cases, several months.
