About Parvovirus b19 igg and igm antibodies

What is parvovirus B19?

Parvovirus B19 is the only virus of the Parvoviridae family that infects humans. Parvovirus B19 infections are common in children causing a rash, fever, runny nose and headache. Parvovirus B19 antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight infection against the virus.

IgM antibodies are the first to be produced in response to an infection and offer short-term protection. IgG antibodies offer long-term protection against pathogens after initial exposure and the presence of IgG antibodies indicates immunity. This may be a result of a previous infection.

Why take the test?

This test detects the presence of both parvovirus B19 IgM and IgG antibodies in the blood and can be used to diagnose a current infection or immunity to parvovirus B19.
