About Osteocalcin

What is osteocalcin?

Osteocalcin is a protein hormone secreted by osteoblasts, the cells responsible for making bone tissue. Its primary role is to regulate metabolism in several different organs. Due to the fact that osteocalcin is secreted solely by osteoblasts, levels of osteocalcin in the blood are a good indicator of the number of osteoblasts and bone density.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of osteocalcin in the blood. It is typically used as an indicator of bone density.
