About Ortho cresol

What is ortho cresol?

Cresols are a group of chemical compounds traditionally extracted from coal tar. They are categorised as phenols and can be found in a variety of naturally occurring substances. Exposure to ortho-cresol (o-cresol) is typically not harmful to health at low levels but can be harmful via skin exposure and inhalation at high concentrations.

Acute symptoms of o-cresol exposure include skin and nose irritation.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of o-cresol excreted in urine. It is typically used to diagnose acute o-cresol exposure.
