About Nickel (urine)

What is nickel?

Nickel is a heavy metal found in the natural environment. It is released into the environment by human activities such as metal processing and mining. Exposure to nickel is most common through contaminated food but nickel may also be present in drinking water, tobacco and jewellery. Nickel may cause allergic reactions in some people resulting in red, itchy skin. Inhalation of nickel in industrial environments has been associated with asthma, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, nose cancer and larynx cancer.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of nickel in the urine and can be used to help detect and monitor exposure to nickel.
