About Neuronal antibody

What are neuronal antibodies?

Neuronal antibodies are produced in paraneoplastic disorders. These are rare conditions that affect the nervous system of patients with cancer. They arise when the immune system produces antibodies against a tumour which also damage the nervous system. Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities.

In some cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Symptoms of paraneoplastic disorders are variable but might include encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), loss of balance, weakness of hands and feet and irregular rapid eye movements.

Why take this test?

This test detects the presence of neuronal antibodies and can be used to help diagnose paraneoplastic disorders.
