About Neurological viral screen
What is the neurological viral screen?
Common viruses such as mumps, measles and rubella can lead to complications such as meningitis (inflammation of the meninges surrounding the brain) or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). This occurs when the virus enters the blood and travels to the brain. Antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight infection against the bacteria.
IgM antibodies are the first to be produced in response to an infection and offer short-term protection. IgG antibodies offer long-term protection against pathogens after initial exposure and the presence of IgG antibodies indicates immunity. This may be a result of a previous infection or vaccination.
Why take the test?
This test detects the presence of antibodies in the blood against common viruses such as those that cause mumps, measles and rubella.
