About Mrsa culture

What is MRSA?

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the name of Staphylococcus aureus strains which are resistant to many commonly used antibiotics. Staphylococcus aureus commonly colonises human skin without any negative effects, typically found in the nose, armpits, groin and buttocks. MRSA usually causes problems if it is able to penetrate beneath the skin and is most common in hospitals where there are many sources of bacteria and often wounds which the bacteria is able to penetrate.

Symptoms of MRSA infection include redness, swelling, warmth, pain and pus on the skin. If the infection is deeper into the body it can lead to elevated core temperature, chills, aches and disorientation.

Why take the test?

This test checks for the presence of MRSA in bodily fluids. It is used to diagnose suspected MRSA infections, typically in hospitals.
