About Mitochondrial antibodies

What are anti-mitochondrial antibodies?

Anti-mitochondrial antibodies are autoantibodies produced by the immune system which target mitochondria. Mitochondria are found in the vast majority of cells, as they produce the energy the cell needs to function. Anti-mitochondrial antibodies are particularly associated with cells of the liver, causing the autoimmune condition primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). Symptoms of PBC include tiredness, itching and jaundice.

Why take the test?

This test screens for anti-mitochondrial antibodies in the blood. It is typically used to diagnose primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).
