About Microfilaria blood film
What are microfilaria?
Filariae are long, filamentous, parasitic roundworms that cause the disease filariasis in humans. The worms reside predominantly in tropical and subtropical countries and they are transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. Mosquitos carry microfilariae, the larvae of filariae, which are transferred to humans where they mature and cause filariasis.
The most common human disease is lymphatic filariasis, transmitted by the worm Wuchereria bancrofti. The disease may be asymptomatic, with many people in affected countries living with the infection unknowingly. Symptoms of lymphatic filariasis can include elephantiasis (enlarged, thickened skin), lymphedema and recurrent infections associated with a damaged lymphatic system.
Why take the test?
This test screens for microfilaria circulating in the blood. It is used to diagnose filariasis.
