About Methylmalonic acid
What is methylmalonic acid?
Methylmalonic acid (MMA) is a compound produced as part of amino acid metabolism. MMA is broken down in a reaction which requires vitamin B12, meaning that a lack of available B12 leads to increased MMA levels. The body requires vitamin B12 to produce red blood cells (RBCs), the oxygen carriers in the bloodstream. Deficiency can lead to anaemia where the body does not produce enough red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of methylmalonic acid in the blood. It is typically used as an indicator of vitamin B12 deficiency.
