About Metanephrines (blood)

What are metanephrines?

Metanephrine is a metabolite of the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline), which is made in the adrenal glands. Metanephrine and normetanephrine can be used to indicate the presence of an adrenal tumour (pheochromocytoma), as these tumours are associated with elevated metanephrines. Potential symptoms of adrenal tumours include; rapid heart rate, fluctuating blood pressure, headaches, sweating, fever, chest pain, nausea, vomiting and weight loss.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of metanephrines metanephrine and normetanephrine in the blood. It is typically used to aid in the diagnosis of adrenal cell tumours.
