About Meningococcal antibodies
What is Meningococcal disease?
Meningococcal disease is caused by the meningococcus bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. The bacteria can live in the nose or throat without causing symptoms and is spread by coughing or sneezing. If meningococcus enters the bloodstream, it can cause meningitis (inflammation of the meninges surrounding the brain) and septicaemia (blood infection). Symptoms of infection include red or purple skin rash, high fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, stiffness of the neck. Antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system to help fight infection against meningococcus. These antibodies are specific to the bacterium and are called meningococcal antibodies.
