What is manganese?

Manganese is an essential mineral for humans found in many foods including nuts, seeds, leafy vegetables and whole grains. It is important for the function of many enzymes including those involved in metabolism of carbohydrates, fat, amino acids and cholesterol. Manganese also has roles in bone health, clotting, reproduction and central nervous system function. Exposure to high levels of manganese might occur through industrial processes such as steel production. Toxic amounts of manganese are associated with neurological and psychiatric changes such as Parkinson’s disease-like symptoms, changes in personality, irritability and aggressiveness. Elevated manganese is also associated with a disease of the blood vessels called Behcet’s disease. Manganese deficiency can lead to changes in carbohydrate and fat metabolism, decreased glucose tolerance, reduced bone health, skin rashes, iron-deficiency anaemia and nausea and vomiting.  

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of manganese in the blood. It is typically used to diagnose bone or kidney problems.
