About Magnesium (red cell)
What is magnesium?
Magnesium is an important mineral for a wide range of processes in the body. Many enzymes in the body, including those which produce energy for cells, are reliant on magnesium for their activity. It also plays essential roles in nerve and muscle function, heart health, absorption of other minerals such as calcium and bone health.
Dietary magnesium can be found primarily in leafy greens, dried fruits such as apricots, nuts and seeds, whole grains and legumes. Consumption of sufficient magnesium is important for good health. Magnesium deficiency can have a profound effect on health, with symptoms including muscle cramps, fatigue, osteoporosis, mental problems, heart problems and asthma.
Excessive magnesium can result in respiratory problems, irritation and flu-like symptoms. Abnormal magnesium levels also affect calcium and potassium levels in the body.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of magnesium in the red blood cells which can be the first indicator of magnesium deficiency. It is typically used to explain symptoms associated with excess or deficient magnesium or to investigate problems with calcium or potassium levels.
