About Ionised calcium
What is ionised calcium?
Calcium is an essential mineral for healthy bodily functions. Along with being the primary component of bones, it is involved in other processes including blood clotting, muscle contraction and nerve damage response. Calcium is found in several different forms in the blood. Ionised calcium, also called free calcium, is the form of calcium not attached to proteins.
If calcium levels in the blood become too low, then calcium is released from the bones to restore normal levels. If calcium levels are too high, it is either stored in the bones or excreted in stool and urine. Abnormal calcium levels in the blood can indicate kidney stones/disease, parathyroid disease or bone health issues.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of ionised calcium in the blood. It is typically used to investigate bone, kidney, liver or thyroid problems.
