About Iodine
What is iodine?
Iodine is an essential mineral in the diet for the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck which produces hormones responsible for many functions including metabolism, heart function, digestion and mood. Iodine is used by the body to make thyroid hormone. An iodine deficiency or excess may cause ill health.
A deficiency can lead to reduced thyroid hormone production resulting in hypothyroidism. Symptoms include fatigue, sensitivity to cold, weight gain and depression. Too much iodine can cause burning of the mouth and stomach, diarrhoea and vomiting and in severe cases lead to a coma.
