About Intermittent fasting panel
What is the intermittent fasting panel?
Intermittent fasting has proven benefits on ageing, weight loss, regulation of blood sugar levels and cholesterol. Studies in animals have shown that calorie restriction also protects against neurodegenerative disorders, autoimmune conditions and cancer. Biological markers such as cholesterol, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and glucose are reduced by intermittent fasting and are useful indicators of its benefits.
Cholesterol is a type of lipid (fat) which is essential for healthy cellular metabolism. Cholesterol forms complexes with triglycerides, phospholipids and apolipoproteins to form lipoproteins, which transport fat and cholesterol around the body through lymph, blood and cerebrospinal fluid. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) or ‘good cholesterol’ is responsible for removing cholesterol from the blood, taking it to the liver for processing.
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or ‘bad cholesterol’ transports cholesterol to different tissues around the body, where it can cause fatty build-up in excessive quantities, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. While a balance of good and bad cholesterol is important for maintaining a healthy metabolism, excess LDL is associated with arterial plaque build-up and increased risk of coronary heart disease. it is generally considered beneficial to have a high HDL to LDL ratio to reduce this risk. IGF-1 is a protein produced by the liver in response to growth hormone.
It is responsible for mediating many of the effects of growth hormone in regulating cell proliferation and growth. Low levels are considered protective against age-related diseases. Glucose is the main sugar circulating in the blood which is broken down from the foods you eat. Diabetes is a condition characterised by high blood sugar.
Why take this test?
