About Interleukin 6
What are interleukins?
Interleukins (IL) are a group of signalling proteins produced by white blood cells. There are several different interleukins, but they are all involved in the regulation of immune cell differentiation, mediating an appropriate immune response to a stimulus such as an invasive pathogen.Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is involved in stimulating certain immune cells (B-cells) to differentiate and produce antibodies in response to inflammation.
It is also involved in several other biological processes such as nerve cell differentiation. Problems with production of any of the different IL proteins is likely to result in an immune system disorder, and IL levels can give an indication of the current activity of the immune system.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of interleukin 6 (IL-6) in the blood. IL-6 is usually used to monitor inflammation from infection or rheumatoid arthritis or to monitor the risk of diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular disease.
