About Interleukin 2
What are interleukins?
Interleukins (IL) are a group of signalling proteins produced by white blood cells. There are several different interleukins, but they are all involved in the regulation of immune cell differentiation, mediating an appropriate immune response to a stimulus such as an invasive pathogen. Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is involved in the induction of proliferation of immune cells, predominantly T-cells and B-cells.
Administration of IL-2 medication has been approved as a therapy for certain types of cancer. Problems with production of any of the different IL proteins is likely to result in an immune system disorder, and IL levels can give an indication of the current activity of the immune system.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of interleukin 2 (IL-2) receptor in the blood. It is used to test for haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a condition that typically presents from birth where the immune system over-produces lymphocytes (white blood cells).
